Free Solar Panels – Grants
Free Solar panels are available via the ECO4 UK government-backed grant scheme. You could be eligible to receive solar panels, combined with other home energy solutions, completely free. Use the power of the sun to run your home on clean green energy, and lower your energy bills. Our experienced engineers can install your new solar panel system quickly so you can start saving on your energy bills whilst reducing your home’s carbon footprint.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Home solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect.
Here’s a simplified explanation of how it works:
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are made up of many small units called solar cells. These cells are usually made of silicon, a semiconductor material.
When sunlight hits the solar cells, it excites the electrons in the silicon atoms, causing them to become free. This movement of electrons creates an electric current.
The electric current generated by the solar cells is in the form of direct current (DC). However, most homes use alternating current (AC) electricity. So, the DC electricity produced by the solar panels is passed through an inverter, which converts it into AC electricity.
The AC electricity produced by the inverter can then be used to power your home’s electrical appliances. Any excess electricity generated that isn’t immediately used can be stored in batteries for later use or exported back to the grid if your system is connected to the grid through a net metering arrangement.
Solar panel systems often include monitoring systems to track the amount of electricity generated and consumed. This allows homeowners to optimise their energy usage and track the performance of their solar panels.
Overall, home solar panels offer a renewable and sustainable way to generate electricity, helping to power your home and reducing your electricity bills over time.

Got A Question About Solar Panel Installation?
The main benefit is that it reduces your electricity costs as you produce a portion of it yourself. Likewise, you’ll be producing green energy, therefore reducing carbon emissions.
If your property is eligible for an ASHP (Air Source Heat Pump) and Solar installation on one of the government lead grant schemes we work on, it will be completely free of charge and usually also includes insulation ventilation measures.
We do not currently fit solar panels privately, only via solar panels grants as part of a whole-house assessment on the ECO4 grant scheme.
Cleaning and testing as part of any ongoing electrical inspections is advised when having your solar panels installed.
If your property does not provide enough light, then it is not eligible for solar panel installation, but could still have an ASHP installation or boiler installation. This will be discussed with you onsite when your initial survey is carried out.
A specific roof is not needed. However, flat roofs are not compatible with the ECO4 scheme. Slate roofs can be more difficult for solar installations but are still compatible.
The lifespan of solar panels is usually in the region of 20–25 years before their efficiency begins to be reduced.
In-depth Explanation of Solar Panels
Solar panels grants in the UK are available for many homeowners and private renters. Therefore, it is useful for residents to have a good understanding of this available technology to improve the energy efficiency of their home.
