Heat Pump Grant Options in the UK

The UK currently offers two principal schemes to help households fund the switch to a heat pump – both aimed at reducing energy bills and carbon emissions:

The Energy Company Obligation 4 (ECO4) scheme is tailored to homeowners and private tenants in receipt of qualifying benefits, or households recognised by their local council as fuel-poor. Under ECO4, you may benefit from a fully funded heat pump installation, with additional upgrades such as insulation or radiator replacement included.

You may qualify for ECO4 support if you:

  • live in a property where someone receives an eligible benefit (for example Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support) or your local council recognises low income/fuel-poverty risk.
  • occupy a home with an EPC rating typically band E–G (and in some cases D).
  • own your home, or rent privately with your landlord’s consent.
  • currently use an inefficient heating system (e.g., an old gas boiler, oil, LPG, or electric storage heaters).

Under ECO4 we can arrange:

  • a new air source heat pump
  • any required insulation (loft, cavity wall, internal)
  • if needed, upgraded radiators or heating distribution
  • full installation, commissioning and post-install EPC

If you meet the eligibility criteria, ECO4 may deliver a no-cost (free) heat pump system.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a simpler, non-means-tested option for homeowners replacing a fossil fuel heating system. Under BUS you can claim a flat £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump installation.

You may be eligible if you:

  • own your property (homeowner or private landlord)
  • are replacing a gas, oil, LPG or direct electric boiler
  • have an up-to-date EPC with no outstanding major insulation recommendations (such as cavity wall or loft insulation)
  • your property is technically suitable for a heat pump system

Whilst BUS does not always equate to a free installation, the £7,500 grant can significantly reduce the upfront investment required.

Which Grant Suits You Best?

BUS£7,500 towards costNoNo (typically only heating system)

If you qualify for ECO4, you could have a fully funded heat pump with no cost to you. If not, the BUS grant still offers substantial support.

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

Heat Absorption

The ASHP contains a refrigerant, typically a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) or a hydrocarbon, which circulates through the system. The outdoor unit of the ASHP contains a coil filled with this refrigerant.

Is my home suitable for an air source heat pump?

As part of the survey we will carry out on your home, our surveyors will assess the level of insulation your home requires, as this is essential for the efficiency of your new heat pump. Furthermore, we will check the space around your home to determine whether there is enough airflow as this powers the heat pump. Likewise, we can consider whether a combination of  an ASHP and solar panels will be right for your property. All this can be installed under the ECO grant scheme and will be discussed with you in more detail.
